2(5H)-Furanone: a prospective strategy for biofouling-control in membrane biofilm bacteria by quorum sensing inhibition BJM
Ponnusamy,Kannan; Paul,Diby; Kim,Young Sam; Kweon,Ji Hyang.
Biofouling of membranes demands costly periodic cleaning and membrane replacement. A sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for maintenance is not available and would be of great interest for many purposes including economical. As complex biofilm formation by environmental strains is the major cause of biofouling and biofilm formation in most cases are controlled by N-Acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)mediated Quorum Sensing (QS). An effort was made to understand the appropriateness of 2(5H)-furanone, to use against biofouling of membranes. QS inhibition activity by 2(5H)-furanone was studied using bioindicator strains and known AHLs of different acyl chain lengths. The biofilm inhibition was studied by growth analysis on polystyrene plate of...

Assessment methodology of backwash in pressurized sand filters AGRIAMBI
Deus,Fábio P. de; Testezlaf,Roberto; Mesquita,Marcio.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to apply a methodology based on sampling sand from contaminated filter beds, to evaluate the performance of the backwash process in pressurized sand filters used in irrigation. Backwash trials were conducted in an experimental module with three new sand filters of the same commercial model. The evaluations were conducted after filtration processes performed using four filtration rates and three separate sand particle sizes (fine - 0.55 mm; medium - 0.77 mm, and coarse sand - 1.04 mm diameter), repeated in three subsequent cycles. After reaching a fixed expansion of 25% of the filter bed height, the backwash processes were performed for 15 min. Backwash cleaning efficiency was evaluated in all trials based on the...

Cândido de Souza, Álvaro Henrique; Seron, Cássio de Castro; Lorenzoni, Marcelo Zolin; de Deus, Fábio Ponciano; Rezende, Roberto.
Backwash process of sand filters requests specific surface velocity to reach the recommended filter bed height expansion, however the expansion of the filter bed height is very influenced by their characteristics. This work had as aim to evaluate the effect of different sand particle size, static filter bed layer and expansion of the filter bed height on a prototype of sand filter during backwash process. The tests were accomplished using a sand filter prototype that had structural similarity and shape as commercial equipments (24 cm of height and 12.7 cm of diameter). The treatments consisted from combinations of five separate sand particle sizes (0.15; 0.33; 0.51; 0.72 e 0.92 mm of medium diameter), five static filter bed layer (5; 7; 9; 11 and 13 cm)...

Evaluation of the effect of the seed extract of Moringa oleifera Lam over the efficiency of organic filters in wastewater treatment of dairy cattle breeding REA
Francisco,João P.; Silva,Jonathas B. G.; Roque,Odir C. C.; Nascentes,Alexandre L.; Silva,Leonardo D. B..
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Moringa oleifera Lam extract on the removal of total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), in different filter media for treating wastewater of dairy cattle breeding (DCW). The moringa seed extract was obtained by grinding 50 g of seeds in one liter of distilled water and, after passing the solution through a quantitative paper filter of 25 microns, 60 mL of the extract were added to wastewater from cattle breeding before the filtration process in organic filters made of thin coal, bamboo leaves, eucalyptus leaves, gliricidia branches and sawdust. This was followed by the completely randomized experimental design, adopting a factorial of 5 x 2. Aliquots of filtered effluent...

Open-air treatment of wastewater from land-based marine fish farms in extensive and intensive systems: current technology and future perspectives ArchiMer
Hussenot, Jerome; Lefebvre, Sébastien; Brossard, Nicolas.
Marine land-based fish farms located in coastal wetlands (salt-pond zones, lagoon banks, etc.), whether extensive or intensive, send farm effluents directly to the sea or after short periods of stocking in retention reservoirs. The aims of our investigation have been to compare the efficiency of current and potential water treatment procedures in open-air. Wastewater retention ponds in commercial farms (Atlantic coasts of France) are efficient in removing up to 1 metric ton of particulate material (dry weight) per hectare and per day (faeces and unconsumed feed), but are inefficient in reducing dissolved wastes, both organic (urea, amino acids, protein) and inorganic (total ammonia nitrogen, phosphates). Forthcoming outdoor technology to treat these forms...

Recovery of lead and cadmium ions from metal-loaded biomass of wild cocoyam (Caladium bicolor) using acidic, basic and neutral eluent solutions Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Horsfall Jnr,Michael; Ogban,Fred E.; Akporhonor,Eyetemi E..
The effects of acidic, basic and neutral reagents on the recovery of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from metal-loaded biomass of wild cocoyam (C. bicolor) were investigated by eluting the biomass in five successive cycles using 0.01 M HCl, 0.1 M HCl, 0.01 M NaOH, 0.1 M NaOH and distilled water at different contact times. The data showed that the ease of metal ion recovery from metal -loaded biomass by the eluent solutions is of the order 0.01 M HCl > 0.1 M HCl > 0.01 M NaOH > 0.1 M NaOH > distilled water. Over 94% Pb2+ and 74% Cd2+ of the initially adsorbed metals were recovered by 0.01 M HCl, while < 20% of both metals was recovered by basic reagent. Distilled water recovered less than 9% of both metal ions from the biomass. Macroscopic changes were also...

Removal of Diuron and Hexazinone from Public Water Supply Using a Filter System Planta Daninha
CALEGARI,R.P.; MENDES,K.F.; MARTINS,B.C.; PIMPINATO,R.F.; BAPTISTA,A.S.; TORNISIELO,V.L..
ABSTRACT: The intensive use of pesticides, such as the herbicides diuron and hexazinone, leads to a concern about the preservation of the water quality of the water resources destined for human consumption. Currently, conventional water treatment techniques do not have high capacity to remove herbicides; therefore, the need to study other techniques arises. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the removal of diuron and hexazinone herbicides present in water through a commercial filtration system. The study was carried out in a filtration system composed of the following sequence of filters: sand filter and coconut shell activated granular carbon, polypropylene filter 20 mm, activated carbon filter with silver salts, polypropylene filter 5...

Traitement des effluents piscicoles marins par lagunage a haut rendement algal ArchiMer
Pagand, Pascal.
When facing the increasing development of aquaculture, farming in recycled water is an alternative to limit the impact on the environment: farming produces a lower amount of wastes but of higher concentration which can be treated. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the efficiency of high rate algal lagooning/ponding (HRAP) for the treatment of marine fish culture effluents. Also, this study utilizes wastes from Dicentrarchus labrax grown in Ifremer's recycled waters station. The first step shows the particularities linked to recycled water farming effluents. They are characterized by low particle and organic substance concentrations as well as strong dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (DIP) concentrations. Furthermore, nitrogen is mainly...

Traitement par lagunage a haut rendement algal (LHRA) des effluents piscicoles marins recycles: évaluation chimique et écotoxicologique ArchiMer
Deviller, Genevieve.
World aquaculture is a fast growing activity and the control of its waste becomes a key issue. Compared to traditional systems, recirculating systems allow to reduce replacement water and waste volumes. Nevertheless their effluents are more concentrated in dissolved nutrients (nitrate, phosphate). The high rate algae pond (HRAP) is one of the possible treatment technique to remove those nutrients. During this work, three rearing systems: one recycled, one recycled with HRAP and one open as a standard, were operated for one year to assess the impact of: (1) the reuse of treated effluent on survival, growth and nutrition of sea bass (2) the rearing system on fish health using multibiomarkers and trace metals accumulation responses and (3) best conditions for...

Water quality for rural home supplying in the south of Brazil Biological Sciences
Hollas, Camila Ester; Pokrywiecki, Ticiane Sauer; Prado, Naimara Vieira do; Chini, Angélica; Düsman, Elisângela; Conceição, Priscila Soraia da.
Underground and surface water as a result of human activity are increasingly polluted. Mainly due to improper disposal of waste, discharge of effluents, among other actions that compromise the environment. The water analysis is necessary to determine and evaluate the situation of water supply to the population. This study evaluated the supply situation of three rural communities located in the south of Brazil, where the water is carried out through the abstraction of groundwater. Pastures, fields and remnants of native vegetation characterize the region. The water quality used to supply was what motivated the accomplishment of this work. The wells are unprotected in the middle of the pastures near to black cesspits and crops that use frequently...
